Holbrook, Arizona was once known as the town was too tough for women Blue Suede Mago Two Tone 140mm or churches. Along with these businesses came saloons, gambling halls, and soiled doves.
Terrill Cottage Saloon was just another drinking establishment in Holbrook until a bloody event changed its reputation, and placed it on the list of notorious gun battles of the West. As a result of a simple poker game that ended in a drunken brawl and murder, the saloon will be forever known as the Bucket of Blood.
Grat Dalton, who was a member of Black Suede Mago Two Tone 140mm the notorious Dalton Gang, and a gambler named George Bell were playing poker with two other men at the Cottage. An argument over a deal of the cards ended with Dalton firing shots from a .45 and killing the other two men. The dead men fell side by side on the saloon floor. Dalton and Bell quickly fled the Cottage and rode out of Holbrook. After the smoke had settled, the bodies of the poker players were removed. The talk about town was that the floor where the dead men laid looked like a bucket of blood had been spilled. From that day on the Cottage Saloon would be called by the locals as the Bucket of Blood.
Dalton was not arrested for the shooting; however, about six months later back in Coffeyville, Kansas, his lucky hand ran out. He was shot and killed with three other members of the Dalton Gang after a botched bank robbery attempt.
By the 1920 the early Route 66 travelers found the Bucket of Blood Saloon as a more respectable establishment. It stood next to a general store and across the road from a small gas station. The saloon drew in the cross country motorists, who stopped by to see Black Suede Maillot 160mm the bullet holes in the walls and the famous stain on the dusty floor.
Today the Bucket of Blood Saloon sits empty and long boarded up from business. You can still get a look at the old drinking icon from the outside on Bucket of Blood Street. A historic self guided tour of Holbrook points out the former businesses and structures on this once thriving thoroughfare. Residents claim there were over 26 shoot outs on the street in front of The Bucket of Blood Saloon.
